1800-Worldcup: World Cup 2002: CONCACAF >> Final Qualification |
|
The qualification process for CONCACAF starts with a series of regional preliminaries and a lot of pot luck.
Preliminary Phase:
| Central America A | Central America B | The winners of each group qualify for part 2 of the qualification process -- termed the semi-finals, while the two runners-up enter the Caribbean Zone's qualification in the 4th Round -- The Interzone: Runner-up of Central
America A vs. Loser Caribbean 2 These two winners move on as Interzone winners #2 and #3. Canada gets half a bye, waiting patiently for the Loser of Caribbean 1 -- and a chance to become Interzone #1.
| Caribbean 1 | Caribbean 2 | Caribbean 3 | The 3 Caribbean Zone winners join the winners of the two Central America groups and move a step nearer to their goal -- the semi-finals. Eight teams now get the chance to take on Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico, and Team USA -- only Costa Rica is not seeded in the groups.
| Group C | Group D | Group E | Final Qualification -- The winners and runners-up of these three groups then enter another round robin, home and away, with the top three making it to the 2002 Korea/Japan Finals.
