  • 3 teams will qualify from the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football.

  • The Guyana Football Association is suspended by FIFA. As long as the suspension is in force, Guyana will be prohibited from taking part in the preliminary competition for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea / Japan.

The qualification process for CONCACAF starts with a series of regional preliminaries and a lot of pot luck.

  1. 6 teams in the Central America Zone.

  2. 25 teams in the Caribbean Zone; to include Bahamas, Bermuda and Canada.

  3. Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico, and Team USA get what amounts to a bye -- having qualified for the past 3 World Cups.

Preliminary Phase:

  • Central American Zone

| Central America A | Central America B |

The winners of each group qualify for part 2 of the qualification process -- termed the semi-finals, while the two runners-up enter the Caribbean Zone's qualification in the 4th Round -- The Interzone:

Runner-up of Central America A  vs. Loser Caribbean 2
Runner-up of Central America B  vs. Loser Caribbean 3

These two winners move on as Interzone winners #2 and #3.

Canada gets half a bye, waiting patiently for the Loser of Caribbean 1 -- and a chance to become Interzone #1.

  • Caribbean Zone
Three groups of eight, play a cup knockout to advance.

| Caribbean 1 | Caribbean 2 | Caribbean 3 |

The 3 Caribbean Zone winners join the winners of the two Central America groups and move a step nearer to their goal -- the semi-finals.

Semi-Final Phase:

Eight teams now get the chance to take on Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico, and Team USA -- only Costa Rica is not seeded in the groups.

Group C Group D Group E
Mexico Jamaica USA
C2 D2 E2
C3 D3 E4
C4 D4 E4

Teams are pulled from Pot E first, each one going into second position in Groups C, D and E. It's the same deal for Pots F and G.

Pot E Pot F Pot G
Costa Rica Caribbean #1 Interzone #1
1st Group A Caribbean #2 Interzone #2
1st Group B Caribbean #3 Interzone #3

| Group C | Group D | Group E |

And Finally:

Final Qualification -- The winners and runners-up of these three groups then enter another round robin, home and away, with the top three making it to the 2002 Korea/Japan Finals.
