UEFA Champions League Final
Bayern Munich --
(in Milan's Giuseppe Meazza stadium)
The atmosphere is electric in Milan as the two
sides shake hands before the start of the 2001 Champions League Final.
Valencia kick off from right to left.
2 Mins --
0-1 -- Penalty for Valencia
in the second minute. Patrik Andersson on the floor handles the ball and Mendieta puts the
spot-kick past Ollie Kahn.
Angloma gets a late challenge on Effenberg and
it's another penalty. This time to Bayern. Saved! Mehmet Scholl's strike went straight at
Canizares, who gets his legs to it.
Bayern troubling Valencia. Lizarazu and
Elber.... but the Brazilian tries to do too much with two defenders breathing down his
Valencia are not content to soak up the Bayern
pressure and push forward looking for a second. Ollie Kahn gets in a big clearance, just
ahead of Killy Gonzalez.
26 Mins --
First yellow card goes to Valencia, Carboni
taking his time.
Salihamidzic and Lizarazu again troubling
Valencia, down the left, but Giovanni Elber is not getting the final touch.
Bayern stoke the ball around in the middle of
the field. Anyone would think that they were a goal up. They're trying to rethink a way
Valencia counter. Lothar Mattheus looks on
from the stands..... could he do any better?
Anyone who saw how Bayern took the Bundesliga
away from Schalke in the dying seconds, by equalising against Hamburg at the weekend,
would not be feeling too troubled. The Bayern fans are still in good voice.
38 Mins --
Valencia counter again and Patrik Andersson
has to commit a cynical foul to stop Aimar and earn himself a place in the book.
Mendieta floats in a free-kick. Big John Carew
gets a head to it..... thankfully for Ollie Kahn the ball whisks past the post.
Again Bayern stroking the ball around then
stepping up the tempo. Lizarazu and Elber once more out of luck.
Half-time -- Last year's
losing finalists are half-way to being this year's winners. Bayern will need to rethink
their strategy. Valencia are tight and counter swiftly.
45 minutes to go for Bayern to level the
scores. Bayern bring in Carsten Jancker for Sagnol and Valencia replace Aimar with
49 Mins --
Penalty to Bayern. Jancker gets above
Carboni.... as the Valencia player falls, the ball hits his arm. Effenberg levels the
Mendietta free-kick has Ollie stranded.....
but it's wide.
With both sides looking for a second goal it's
end to end with frustrated fouls. Both sets of fans are adding to the atmosphere. Zhaovic
comes on for Sanchez.
Both teams stand a chance of winning
this but equally they're afraid of losing and the game is looking nervous. The Spanish
fans try to get Valencia going.
Carew gets a low cross into Zahovic in the
middle of the Bayern area. The Slovenian takes a little too long and Ollie Kahn is able to
smother the ball at his feet.
Ayala gets stretchered off and stands up as
soon as they get to the touchline. Valencia can ill-afford to lose him as we head towards
Ayala tried to continue but can't and is
replaced by Djukic as three minutes are added on.
Jancker lets one fly from outside of the
Valencia area. He could have sealed the final in the last seconds. Instead, the ball
screams wide and we go into extra-time.......
Canizares keeps Valencia in the game with a
quick reaction to Bayern pressure, in the second minute of extra-time.
Again Canizares thwarts Bayern, this time from
Salihamidzic who's still looking very fresh considering the amount of work he's done.
At the other end, Ollie Kahn saves from
Zahovic. There's more life in this first eight minutes of extra-time than there was in the
Elber goes off for Zickler.
Bayern pile on the pressure as the end of the
first period of extra-time comes to and. Valencia hold out and Carew comes close at the
other end after another typical Valencia counter.
Fifteen minutes before the penalties.
-- Kily Gonzalez goes down in the Bayern area and gets booked for
Paulo Sergio comes on for Mehmet Scholl.
Valencia free-kick goes straight to Ollie
Kahn. We're eight minutes away from penalties.
Three minutes before the end..... Bayern get a
couple of corners in sucession. Canizares is up to the challenge. How will the keepers do
in the one on ones?
