Port Moresby, on Paga Point, is the capital of
Papua New Guinea. The popular bathing spot south of the capital is Ela Beach.
The capital of Papua New Guinea gets its name from the British
Captain John Moresby who explored the area in 1873, and named the port after his father,
Admiral Sir Fairfax Moresby.
Japanese forces came to within 35 miles of Port Moresby in 1942, but
were repelled by a joint US and Australian counteroffensive.
