of Charente-Maritime is located in the région of Poitou-Charentes.
The préfecture is La Rochelle
and the sous-préfectures are Jonzac, Rochefort, Saintes and Saint-Jean d'Angély.
Neighbouring departments are Charente,
Gironde, Deux-Sèvres
and Vendée.
The department is named after the river Charente, which flows into
the Atlantic Ocean.
It was formerly called Charente-Inférieure (Lower-Charente) but was
renamed to Charente-Maritime (Coastal-Charente) because Inférieure was regarded as
depreciative by the locals.
