of Yvelines is located in the région of Île-de-France.
The préfecture is Versailles and
the sous-préfectures are Mantes-la-Jolie, Rambouillet and Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
Neighbouring departments are Eure, Eure-et-Loir, Essonne,
Hauts-de-Seine and Val-d'Oise.
After General de Gaulle's proposed new department name of
Versailles was turned down by the National Assembly, the department was eventually named
after the legendary forest near Paris.
