Aquatics

Synchronised Swimming was added as an Olympic event, although it had been an exhibition sport from 1948 to 1968.

Mary T. Meagher, appropriately nicknamed 'Madame Butterfly', won three gold medals; in both butterfly events (100m and 200m) and in the 4x100m medley relay.

Athletics

Having already registered herself as the youngest person of either sex to win an athletics gold medal in an individual event (in Munich 1972) Ulrike Meyfarth returned to the competition twelve years later; to pick up her second gold medal and become the oldest person to ever win an Olympic gold in the high jump.

Daley Thompson, of Great Britain, completed an Olympic double in the Decathlon after his gold medal from Moscow 1980 was added to in Los Angeles.

Basketball

Michael Jordan represented the United States at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, before professional basketball players could take part, and led the US team towards gold; with his average scoring of 17.1 points per game.
