Travel Writers - Writing About Travel

Travelling through Serbia and Montenegro by car and some of the things you might find along the way.

Hungary to Serbia

The Serbian border guards now allow English cars into their country and if you're coming from Szeged (Hungary) you can even get a Green Card (supplementary motor insurance coverage) at the Horgos crossing - 125 Euros for one month (the minimum).

You can also change money here.

Nearby Palic has a choice of accommodation near the lake but after Subotica, the chance of finding somewhere to stay, or even eat, along the road are limited; so be sure to head for a reasonably sized town.

While there's a good dual-carriageway between Hugos and Belgrade, driving down the national roads 22 (to Novi Sad) and 21 (through Ruma, Sabac, Valjevo and Uzice is more interesting.

If you're fortunate enough to make it to Uzice before nightfall, here's how you can make the best of a bad deal.

The old lady at the tourist information office (near the main square) was friendly enough and spoke English but could only supply a tourist brochure and map of the area in Serbian. The pictures are nicely presented and you can compare the Serbian photographs with place names on the map.

Before arriving in the town, we were recommended the Hotel Palas (Category B) but even the lady at the reception, who spoke German, suggested that perhaps we should look at the Hotel Zlatibor (Category A); on the main square, just around the corner.

The three-star Hotel Zlatibor towers high above the main square and has a small parking area to the side. Rooms here cost 2,080 dinars (€26) for a double.

The hotel may once have been considered a luxury hotel but today it's just about ok for a night; if you're not afraid of heights.

The Zlatibor does have a restaurant but if the weather is nice and you want to try Serbian dishes, I suggest you eat outside at the Restaurant Romansa; just across the road from the hotel, to the right of the entrance.

To meet the local Serbs, there are a number of bars on the main square with outside tables.

If you find the overnight options in Uzice too depressing and still have half an hour to spare, there are a few hotel options in the Zlatibor mountainous area; on the road to Podgorica (Montenegro).

One hotel in particular, just before the Hotel Jugopetrol, even boasted an outside swimming pool.
