Nomadic Gatherings by Michel Guntern
Nomadic Gatherings: Chapter Four: Colonial Gateway - Going Bananas.
No hot-dog sellers set up stall in Canton, but plenty of bananas were on display.
They were smaller than those in Korea, but generally fatter.
Bunches of ripening yellow hung from kiosks, lay spread-out on mats on the floor. There were more in baskets and even on the back of bikes. The bananas were to Canton what garlic, striped shirts and berets were to caricature France.
At rush hour in Qiyi Lu, a flood of bicycles held up the buses.
It was a cycle-jam extraordinaire, as cyclists dismounted to push their bicycles up and over bridges.
It was never easy to cross the roads; ringing bells would appear from behind a hooting taxi, that was changing lanes contrary to its indicator.
