With an area of 6,878 km², the département
of Côtes-d'Armor is located in the région of Bretagne.
The préfecture is Saint-Brieuc
and the sous-préfectures are Dinan, Guingamp and Lannion.
Neighbouring departments are Finistère,
Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan.
Initially named Côtes-du-Nord (Northern-Coasts), due to its
geographical situation in Brittany, the department changed its name in the 1990s; when it
was thought that 'Northern' could limit tourism.
The French-Breton hybrid name of Côtes-d'Armor was chosen; as in
Breton, Armor means the sea.
