Although invented in Scotland in the 1400's, the
popularity of golf was hindered by the need for close-cropped grass.
As the lawnmower wasn't invented until 1831 and only
really practical once the machine-tool industry could cut steel gears in the 1880's, the
playing of golf finally made it to America in 1888, when St. Andrews Golf Club of Yonkers
was formed.

Masters Golf:
The first Tournament was held on March 22nd, 1934, and since 1940, the Masters was
scheduled each year during the first full week in April. The Augusta National Golf Club is
located on the corner of Washington and Berckmans Roads.
PGA Tour:
In 1895, 10 professional golfers and one amateur played in the first U.S. Open in Newport,
R.I. Shortly thereafter, tournaments began to pop up across the country. In 2006, the PGA
Tour boasted 48 official events offering more than $250 million in prize money.
Saint Andrews:
America's oldest golf club (1888) and founding member of the USGA, Saint Andrew's is one
of golf's venerated historical venues. Only 20 minutes drive from New York City, the
membership and their guests enjoy the game in a spectacular setting and play one of the
area's best-conditioned and exciting layouts - a challenging par-71 golf course,
re-designed by Jack Nicklaus in 1983.
