Travel to Bulgaria
Bulgaria is popular mainly as a cheap beach and skiing destination but
it has much more to offer to the discerning traveller: interesting cultural heritage,
beautiful monasteries and museum towns, preserved traditions and folklore, great food and
wines.
The best time for a visit to Bulgaria is April to October.
Do not miss the Thracian tombs in Kazanlak and Sveshtari, the sacred Thracian city of Perperikon, the Opera Festival in Plovdiv, the Rose Festival in Kazanlak.
Be sure to see at least a few of the many Bulgarian monasteries (some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites): the Rila Monastery, the Bachkovo Monastery, the Troyan
Monastery, and the Rozhen Monastery.
If you enjoy the atmosphere of museum towns, consider Melnik,
Koprivshtitsa, Nesebar, Arbanasi, and Plovdiv.
If you appreciate wine, wine tasting is available in many wineries in
Melnik, Brestovitsa, Sliven, and Tarnovo.
If you have an opportunity to listen to a concert of authentic Bulgarian
folk music, do not miss it. A Bulgarian folksong even flew on the Voyager as part of
humanity's message to other civilizations.
