of Essonne is located in the région of Île-de-France.
The préfecture is Evry and the
sous-préfectures are Etampes and Palaiseau.
Neighbouring departments are Eure-et-Loir,
Loiret, Seine-et-Marne,
Yvelines, Hauts-de-Seine
and Val-de-Marne.
Created in 1964, when the former department of Seine-et-Oise (78)
was divided, the new department was named after the river Essonne; a tributary of the
Seine.
