The independent island state of Antigua and Barbuda
includes the uninhabited rocky islet of Redonda to the south-west.
When Christopher Columbus landed
on the island he called Antigua, in 1493, it was inhabited by the fierce Carib tribe. They
hindered colonisation of the island until the British established a settlement there in
1632.
Thirty years later, settlers from Antigua moved north to establish a
presence on Barbuda too.
Antigua and Barbuda became an independent state on
November 1, 1981.
