People
and Places
How often are you
disappointed with the photographic memories that are returned from the lab after you
return from far-away locations? We know that we often are; that all too elusive perfect
shot, just didn't happen.
The good news is that you
needn't fork out more for the equipment, than the price of your holiday. When I had a
whole bag of camera bodies and lenses stolen in China,
three days before Christmas, I bought a ten dollar instamatic from Tian'Men Square, and
continued on to Vietnam with it.
If you train yourself to look,
then you will see better results.
Get in closer
to focus on something specific, and fill the frame with
the scene so that the viewer's eye doesn't wander but goes to where you want it to go.
When photographing the tourist sites, try a different
angle of something that has already been photographed a million times, or try for a detail
that really makes it special.
And of course, a natural border
will ease the eye in to the subject. But don't overdo this. We don't want to see all
pictures looking the same.
By all means take that picture of aunty Nora
at wherever in the world it is you are, but try to look for something more visually
stimulating so that others will want to see what you have produced, instead of groaning
when you get out that shoe-box of dog-eared photographs again.

This was taken with a compact camera:
Hortobagy, The oldest stone bridge in Hungary.

Always use the slowest film
possible [100 ASA]. For slides, we like to use Fujichrome, although for prints Kodacolor
Gold gets excellent results.
Showing your treasures on a world wide web
photo gallery is ever easier. Our slides are on PhotoCds, but a print can easily be
scanned in and ready to use in minutes.
Save photographs as jpeg
files, and try to keep them small. Paint Shop Pro (free 30 day trial) does an excellent job of shrinking
them. The above 300x200 image is a little over 12k.
Travel Photography
Competition:
To enter the Travel Notes People and Places Photography Competition
is easy.
The competition is free to enter.
The theme is People and Places.
Feel free to interpret it how you like. People do not need to be in the photo, but if they
are it needs to say something about the place.
You may not enter photographs taken by other
people, and by entering this competition you give Travel Notes the rights to publish
the image in Travel Notes Multimedia, free of reproduction fees, although you will be
credited as the photographer and the copyright remains yours.
You may enter as many times
as you like, but each entry must be submitted separately with a completed entry form, and
a different image.
The image must be digital, in
.jpg format, and less than 135Kbytes in size. No entries will be returned, and no
correspondence entered into, so make sure you keep a copy.
Prizes and closing date have
not yet been determined, although we intend to add $1 to the kitty for every photograph
entered into the gallery up to a maximum of $500. The prizes may not necessarily be in US
dollars, or even cash. We are talking with sponsors about airline tickets and other
travel-related prizes of equivalent value, or more. There may even be an assignment for
Travel Notes.
All announcements will be
made on the Travel Notes mailing list and on this website.
Not all entries submitted
will make it to the Photo Gallery stage. These will be selected by the Travel Notes
editors. All accepted entries, displayed in our Photo Gallery, will then be judged by
fellow entrants and visitors to Travel Notes. The final decision will be made by Travel
Notes.
To encourage voting, we may
offer a prize to the visitor or entrant who tips the winner, and depending on the response
we may make monthly selections; with monthly winners moving forward toward the top prize.
The Entry Form:
The above link is to our e-mail address with the subject line People_And_Places. By
submitting your entry to us you state that you have read the points outlined in this
article and agree to these terms and conditions. All entries will become the property of
Travel Notes, and we reserve the right to terminate the competition if we have less than
500 entrants in the gallery. The more people who enter, the better the prize we can offer.
Copy and paste the following
questions into the body of your e-mail message and answer them all in English.
This constitutes the entry form.
