Athens 2004 - 13th to 29th August

The 2004 Olympic Games returned to Greece, the country of their birth.

The modern Olympic revival began in Athens, in 1896, and they returned to the capital of Greece for the XXVIII Olympiad, with the Paralympic Games following on from 17th to 28th September.

Accommodation in Athens during the Olympic Games might be hard to negotiate so consider staying outside the capital or visit Athens after the Olympics, when the crowds have gone and the temperature is cooler.

Medal Winners at the Athens 2004 Olympics

Aquatics

Athens 2004 marked the first time in Olympic Games history that all Aquatics events took place in a single venue; the Olympic Aquatic Centre of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex.

Archery

The Olympic Archery competition was held at the Panathinaiko Stadium. Also known as Kallimarmaro, this is where the first modern Games were held and where Greek runner Spyridon Louis became the first marathon winner.

Canoe/Kayak

With her gold medal in the kayak fours (K-4 500m) and silver in the kayak double (K-2 500m) in Athens, Birgit Fischer (formerly of East Germany) took her total tally to twelve medals (8 gold and 4 silver) in 24 years of Olympic competition.

Football

Mia Hamm has been an inspiration to American women's football, winning gold in Atlanta 1996, silver in Sydney 2000 and gold again in Athens.

Sailing

Designed by Jan Linge in 1967, the smaller-sized Yngling replaced the Soling.

Volleyball

Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede of Brazil became the first beach volleyball pair to earn medals in two Olympics; albeit it silver both times.
