Seoul 1988

Cuba boycotted the Seoul 1988 Olympics.

Aquatics

US diver Greg Louganis cracked his head on the springboard while attempting a reverse 2.5 pike. After receiving stitches, Louganis went on to win the gold in both men's events.

Archery

Kim Soo-Nyung won gold medals in both the individual and team archery events in front of her home crowd.

Cycling

Christa Luding-Rothenburger, from the former East Germany, is the only person in any sport to have won medals in both the Winter Olympics and the Summer Olympics - in the same year. Better known in Olympic circles as a speed skater, Christa Luding-Rothenburger won the cycling track silver medal in Seoul and followed up with a gold at the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics, in the 1,000m speed skating event and a silver in the 500m speed skating.

Equestrian

With a team victory in Seoul, Germany's Reiner Klimke made it six gold and two silver medals in the dressage; an Olympic record for the equestrian events.

Mark Todd put New Zealand horse riding on the Olympic map by winning back to back individual eventing gold medals in Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul.

Table Tennis

Once considered a genteel, after-dinner alternative to lawn tennis, in 1890s England, table-tennis was introduced to the Olympic Games in South Korea.

Tennis

An original Olympic sport at Athens 1896, tennis was dropped from the Olympic program after Paris 1924 and didn't appear again until 1988.

When Steffi Graf won the women's singles gold medal, the German became the first person to win a 'Golden Slam'; wining a gold medal in the same year as lifting the Australian Open, French Open, US Open and Wimbledon Grand Slam titles.
