Guy Fawkes' attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament, for the Catholics, in 1605 was thwarted. This is remembered by the lighting of bonfires, with a stuffed effigy of Guy on the top, and firework displays around the country. Children used to parade their Guys around the streets asking a "Penny for the Guy". They would probably spit in your face if you gave them a penny today.
