World Fairs and International Expos

As a leading industrial power, London staged the first World Fair back in 1851; under the theme 'Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations'.

Since 'The Great Exhibition' in 1851, many more nations have come forward to sponsor an international exhibition of their own: Australia, Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Portugal, South Korea, and USA.

The World Expo

Compared to major sporting events like the World Cup or Summer Olympics, World Expos often remain in our collective consciousness thanks to some of the stunning architectural reminders and national pavillions that continue to decorate our planet.

Bureau of International Exhibitions

Created at the 1928 Paris Convention, the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) set out to define the rights and responsibilities of the organizers and participants of an Expo.

Today the BIE categorizes these international exhibitions into two main types: World Expos and International Expos.

Expo Time scale

A World Expo (International Registered Exhibition) is now held every five years and lasts a maximum of 6 months; while an  International Expo (International Recognized Exhibition) sits between two World Expos and lasts for a maximum of three months.

Next World Expo

Expo Milan 2015: (01 May to 31 Oct)
With the theme 'Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life' Expo 2015 will hope to display tradition, creativity and innovation in the business of food.

Expo 2015 will be located on a 1.7 million sqm site north-west of Milan, comprising part of the municipal territory of Pero and Rho.

Bids For Expo 2020

Brazil (Sao Paulo)
Russia (Ekaterinburg)
Thailand (Ayutthaya)
Turkey (Izmir)
United Arab Emirates (Dubai)

Since Last US Exposition

The 1984 Louisiana World Exposition in New Orleans was the last World Expo to be held on US soil.
