2016 Regional Reform in France

Before the regional reform that took effect on 1st January, 2016, metropolitan France was divided into 22 administrative regions, plus several overseas regions Share on Facebook
Metropolitan Regions
The 22 metropolitan regions included well-known areas such as Alsace, Auvergne, Champagne-Ardenne, Languedoc-Roussillon, Lorraine, Midi-Pyrénées, Rhône-Alpes, and others.
Some regions like Brittany, Corsica, Centre-Val de Loire, Île-de-France (Paris region), Pays de la Loire, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur remained unchanged after the 2016 reform.
Pre 2016 Regions of France
Groups of departments only became known as regions in 1982.
Some regions reused the names of the traditional provinces but their geographical borders may have differed from those of the former provinces.
